Luca Cetorelli | Elementary School Writing Tutor

My name is Luca Cetorelli, and I am an 11th grader at Bard High School Early College Queens. Throughout my academic career, I have involved myself in both writing, tutoring and work with students. At my high school, we have a peer-tutoring program where students can sign up as tutors for particular subjects, and other students can go to them to seek help in their designated subjects. Last year, I worked as one of the student tutors for writing. Additionally, during my time in middle school, I took a child development class, where we were paired with elementary students, and were meant to act as mentors to them. As a mentor, I was tasked with assisting my mentee in anything academic. We often wrote stories together and played writing games. I was also expected to offer them social help. This forced me to learn how to establish a strong connection with my mentee, which motivated them to work harder when I assisted them academically. I see this opportunity as no different. As a tutor, I will work to establish both social and academic bonds with my students. I will also employ strategies that include but are not limited to: working closely with parents to figure out how their child learns best, using online resources such as Purdue O.W.L., and having access to the student’s assignment portal so we can figure out exactly what their teacher is looking for them to learn.
