Jared Barlament | Middle School Reading Tutor

Hi, I'm Jared Barlament, and I'm a junior at Columbia University studying archaeology and philosophy. I've always been a voracious reader and an advocate for reading (can you believe I made my high school girlfriend read Plato's Republic?), and being an author, an essayist, and largely a self-editor, I've gotten in a lot of practice in critical reading and properly conforming to English grammar's nit-pickiest rules. I believe listening on part of the tutor is crucial for their students' success; I remember middle school me very well, and I know he knew what he was and wasn't getting in school. Therefore, I plan on always opening that line of communication before tutoring even begins so that we can cut straight to the chase during sessions. I might be in the city for school, but I'm still a Midwestern farmhand at heart, and I hope to translate the patience and attention to detail necessary in that line of work to my tutoring. I know I was always too embarrassed to admit to my teachers that I wasn't understanding something, especially after the second or third time they covered it, so I want to take the pressure off my own students to "just get it right" and make them feel comfortable asking to go over the material as many times as need be.
